Grant Gustin’s two episode appearance as Barry Allen on “Arrow” has come and gone. In a word, he was fantastic in the role. Add to that the cliff-hanger ending to his second episode, and I’m even more excited for the pilot episode of “The Flash.” As the episode will be in production in the coming months, casting news has started to trickle its way onto the internet. First up, is the addition of Jesse L. Martin as Det. West. The character is described as follows; “Det. West, an honest, blue-collar cop who is a surrogate father to Barry. A soulful, funny and caring father to Iris — Barry’s potential love interest — West came up through the foster care system and took Barry in after his mother’s slaying and father’s imprisonment. He believes in Barry and supports his efforts to prove his father’s innocence.” I don’t know much about Jesse L. Martin as an actor, but for what it’s worth he played a detective for almost 10 years on “Law & Order.” I’d say this is in his wheelhouse, and he’ll provide solid, reliable acting at the very least.
The CW has also cast Rick Cosnett & Danielle Panabaker in supporting roles for the pilot, and hopefully beyond. Cosnett will play “Detective Eddie Thawne, a recent transfer to the Central City Police Department, whose past is a mystery and who harbors a dark secret.” Meanwhile, Ms. Panabaker will play “Caitlin Snow, a highly intelligent bioengineering expert who lost her fiancé during an explosion at S.T.A.R. Labs.” Eddie Thawne is none other than Eobard Thawne aka the Reverse Flash, while Caitlin Snow is the alter ego of DC Comics villain Killer Frost.
In addition to seeing Grant Gustin continue to grow in the roles of Barry Allen/The Flash, I look forward to seeing how The Rogues are explored. The Flash has the second best set of villains in the DC Universe trailing only the Batman villains, in my opinion.
